Good SEO often begins with having good On-Page SEO. This involves having the right keywords in the right places on your page.

On-Page SEO is often overlooked but it is the first step towards building relevance for your target keyword.

Let’s look briefly at how to make this happen.

 

1. Choose a good keyword strategy

The foundation of a good On-Page SEO strategy is a good keyword strategy. Keywords are what users’ type into Google, Yahoo & Bing when doing online searches. For your page or website to appear in a users search results you need to do keyword research to understand how users search. You can use the Google Keyword Tool to do this. 

The ideal keyword must satisfy the ff criteria:

  • Relevant: It should be related to your business and what you do
  • Traffic: It should satisfactory levels of traffic
  • Competition: It should have low levels of competition

 

2. Use your keyword in the title of the page you want to rank for

When Google is scanning your page to understand what it is about, one of the first things it looks out for is the title of your page. This is not what is written in the content of your page but what shows in the tab at the top of your browser. Make sure to include your keyword in that title.

 

3. Use your keyword in the header of your page

Another key place to ensure you’ve optimised is your header of your page. There are different types of headers including H1, H2, and H3 and so on. H1 carries more weight than H2, and H2 more than H3 and so on. To further optimise your page, include an H1 header that contains the keyword you are targeting. This will further enhance your chances of ranking for that word.

 

4. Use your keyword in your page content

DO NOT stuff your keyword in every sentence of your content. Try going for once in every paragraph. Also use keyword variations to increase the scope of words you want to rank for.

 

5. Use your keyword in the alt text of your images

Google cannot read images so to help it know what an image represents, ensure you create relevant alt texts for your images, by including your keyword in an image’s alt text.
